How to Begin a Nursing Job Search

Regardless of the area in which you seek employment, it takes a focused effort to find and secure the best opportunity. Finding a job does not happen overnight, and depending on the status of health care economics when the nursing job search is begun, it may take a few days or as long as several months.

The first step in your nursing job search is preparation. Know what clinical area you are interested in and what skills you have that may fit that area. Before graduation, ask the nursing faculty members who have worked closely with you during clinical rotations what skills and abilities they perceive you to have, and where they believe you to excel.

New graduates have the ability to deliver care to a variety of patients and their families. But once a desirable clinical area is identified, longer-term goals should be reviewed for learning and employment opportunities. Essential to a successful nursing job search understands yourself – who you are, what challenges you professionally and what essentially inspires you to work. In completing your self-assessment, you can look at each job as a career segment.

By having a long-term goal in mind, you can see where you need to be to stay on target and which job may provide the best opportunities for success. At this point, it is helpful to talk with someone who has experience in the field you are interested in pursuing.
